The Society of Family Planning and the Society of Family Planning Research Fund (the Society) strive for just and equitable abortion and contraception, informed by science. We achieve our vision by serving as the source for science on abortion and contraception and supporting abortion and contraception research. Our accomplishments include building a community of over 1,300 scholars and partners, serving as the academic home for subspecialists in complex family planning, producing well-regarded clinical practice guidelines, and convening the premier scientific conference on abortion and contraception. We are also committed to funding research on abortion and contraception through focused funding opportunities, and leveraging that research for impact.

We seek someone excited about moving forward our strategy to build and support an inclusive, multidisciplinary, skilled, and well-connected community with a shared focus on family planning. With superb people and organizational skills, you will manage the development and execution of the Society’s membership program. This is  a remote position and open to candidates living in the US. It is anticipated that the person in this position will travel approximately 25% of the time. This position reports to the Senior Events Manager.

Specific responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Recruit and retain members: 50%

• Maintain an accurate membership database, renewal processing, and exiting of members
• Lead membership recruitment and renewal campaigns
• Develop membership recruitment and support materials independently and with support from teammates and consultants
• Improve membership recruitment and retention through evidence-based strategies
• Manage joint membership with ESC and SMFM; look for opportunities for additional joint memberships
• Process member vetting with security consultant
• Serve as the key staff contact for answering questions about membership, renewals, benefits, and tech support
• Manage and promote member benefits
• Ensure benefits are meeting members’ needs
• Track membership demographics and other key variables
• Determine, in partnership with evaluation team members, what gaps there are in our membership; and develop strategies for filling those gaps
• Attend relevant conferences and other events for in-person recruiting
• Work across programs to spot additional recruitment outputs

Build connections and community: 20%

• Manage and promote Society Connect
• Develop, maintain, and promote Special Interests Groups
• Cultivate relationship with members, with particular attention to their unique expertise  and scholarship
• Build the capacity for members to connect with one another
• Build relationships with partners who leverage research (including advocates, lawyers, and others); connect scholars, clinicians, and partners with one another
• Establish connections to other academic societies and identify liaison opportunities for Society members
• Work with communications consultant and other staff to track and celebrate members’ accomplishments
• Oversee the development, tracking, and delivery of swag and promotional items
• Work with the events team to increase accessibility of Society-sponsored events

Program development and management: 20%

• Developing program plans, budgets, and timelines, in collaboration with the team, that align with the Society’s strategic plan and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Vision
• Chair the Membership Committee and recruit members to the Committee, lead the Committee, and identify opportunities for committee members to support the strategic goals of membership
• Produce funder reports and membership metrics
•  Prepare and oversee program budget, with support of finance staff
•  Work efficiently and precisely with the finance staff to process revenue associated with member dues
•  Steward the implementation and updating of microsite and member facing portal
•  Manage and enhance benefits provided to members
•  Work with other staff to identify opportunities to develop membership programing in their programs
•  Collaborate across programs to provide membership-related benefits

Support communications and fundraising: 10%

• Oversee promotional materials and marketing in print and digital formats
• Lead the development of membership-focused communications to membership
• Support and manage fundraising materials for the Experience Fund, in partnership with the events team
• Manage the Society’s social media platforms

Highly-qualified applicants will meet many of the qualifications below, and have clarity on areas that are ongoing growth areas. In general, we seek a team member who brings:

• Experience managing a membership program and building relationships with scholars, advocates, lawyers, and others working on abortion and contraception
• Palpable commitment to the Society’s vision, missions, and programs including a demonstrated commitment to centering underrepresented and diverse constituencies, such as communities of color, people with disabilities, LGBTQ communities, and others
• High level of computer literacy, including confidence using an association management system, Google Apps, Box, Zoom, Word, Excel, Slack, Asana or similar project management tool, and Adobe software tools. Experience working with MemberClicks and WordPress a bonus.
• Solutions-orientation, with a passion for identifying pragmatic, equitable, and sustainable ways to tackle big and small challenges
• Strong communications and editorial skills with experience crafting newsletters, promotional materials, and social media posts
• Ability to juggle competing demands and meet deadlines while maintaining quality
• Ability to listen to and engage with stakeholders’ needs and concerns; welcomes feedback and incorporates it to improve processes, procedures, and programming
• Ability to build and sustain authentic relationships across lines of difference
• Willingness to pitch in as needed; we are a small nonprofit and everyone contributes
• Fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19
