The Soto Zen Buddhist Association (SZBA) is seeking a proven leader for its newly-created position of Executive Director. This half-time job represents an exciting development in our organization’s maturation. We seek a leader who will help SZBA be more robust, effective, impactful and professional. Leaving administrative and operational duties to the Operations Coordinator (also half-time), our Executive Director will provide vision, thought leadership, strategy, outreach and advocacy within SZBA and the larger Buddhist community in North America, ensure that we provide value and relevance to our current members, and grow in a strategic manner that increases our impact.
SZBA is the largest organization of Soto Zen priests in North America. Our 300 members from across North America include some of the leading thinkers and teachers in Western Zen Buddhism today. A 501(c)3 organization founded in 2003, we are governed by an all-volunteer Board comprised of priests and laypeople, and operate with a budget approaching $100,000.
Programs. Provide value and relevance to our members through effective marketing, communication, coordination and utilization of programs by members. (20% of time)
Membership. Retain, actively engage, and grow our membership. (20% of time)
Fundraising. Ensure financial sustainability and growth by raising annual operating and program funds. (60% of time)
Our Executive Director may be located anywhere in the continental U.S.
Our Executive Director will be an independent contractor (IRS Form 1099) and receive $35,000. in year one. Any increase in hours and/or pay in subsequent years are contingent on meeting fundraising targets.
