AUTM is the nonprofit leader in efforts to educate, promote and inspire professionals to support the development of academic research that changes the world and drives innovation forward through technology transfer. In this role, as the Marketing Director, you will be employed by AUTM in support of its mulit-year grant to run the Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC). FLC is a nationwide network of more than 300 federal laboratories, agencies, and research centers that fosters commercialization best practice strategies and opportunities for accelerating federal technologies from out of the labs and into the marketplace.

What you will do:
You will oversee the work of colleagues and vendors on the marketing team, as well as being responsible for your own projects and deliverables. You will work regularly with colleagues at AUTM, as well as the FLC Executive Board and representatives from government labs. You will work remotely but candidates in the Washington, DC or Chicago area are preferred.
Create a 5-year strategic communications plan for the FLC that details current and future initiatives, budget and success metrics to support the FLC’s strategic plan. You will focus on initiatives to improve meeting promotion, increase website traffic and social media engagements and reach, enhance the promotion of FLC educational programs and support advocacy efforts.
Direct the FLC’s marketing and communications budget.
Contribute to the FLC’s social media channels.
Provide all updated content to FLC’s website and liaise with website developers and vendors during a planned website redevelopment.
Work closely with the media to promote the work of FLC’s labs and the value of federal technology transfer.
Provide executive communications support to the FLC leadership through speechwriting and the creation of PowerPoint presentations for leadership.
Provide writing, editing and support for all FLC editorial content and collateral, including, but not limited to, external member emails, brochures, newsletters, webinars and event program guides.
Provide oversight for the FLC’s Annual Report to Congress and the President.
Oversee the FLC’s Awards Program, including a 50-page national award document that profiles winners, as well as four smaller regional award documents.
Create and direct all collateral necessary to promote FLC’s National Meeting, including branding, emails, signage and program guide content and design and executive communications.
Direct the promotion of FLC metrics and surveys and reports.
Work with writers, copy editors and leadership to ensure that all publications are well-considered, analytically sound, and free from grammatical, spelling and mathematical errors.
Work with designers to provide guidance and oversight on format and layout during months-long iterative processes.
Ensure consistent adherence to professional writing standards and style guidance.
Coordinate and manage internal and external vendors and stakeholders (data managers, writers, copy editors, designers, volunteers, FLC leadership) to publish high-quality program publications within budget and deadlines.
Provide support, as needed, for advertisements, web content, articles, blog posts, emails and other communications.
Provide onsite support at some meetings and events.
Proven ability to line-manage.
Proven writing and editing skills, and ability to recognize and articulate content development needs.
Ability to understand, analyze, edit, and distill for the layperson complex, scientific material in a wide range of areas.
Excellent time management skills and comprehensive attention to detail.
Able to successfully manage multiple projects and adhere (strictly) to all editorial and production schedules and deadlines.
Interpersonal skills and assertiveness needed to elicit cooperation from internal staff and external authors/writers, reviewers/copy editors, and volunteer content experts. Ability to collaborate with colleagues at all levels including your own managers and government stakeholders.
High energy and multi-task oriented, with ability to self-start prioritize.
Capacity to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and meet deadlines.
Team-player skills, drawing energy and enthusiasm from working with others.
A four-year degree in marketing, communications or journalism is preferred with a minimum 10 years’ experience in marketing management, communications or similar field.
Experience working with technology transfer (preferred but not required).
Demonstrated people and project management experience.
Experience managing a website redevelopment project.
Comfort working with website content management tools and basic HTML code.
Strong attention to detail and proofreading skills, working knowledge of Associated Press style.
Excellent oral and written skills including a command of English grammar, usage and vocabulary.
Strong proficiency and working knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Google Docs.
Ability to work as a team as well as independently.
Experience and sound judgment that allows you to plan and accomplish goals.
