The American Pops Orchestra (APO) was founded in 2015 by Maestro Luke Frazier with the aim of breathing new life into orchestra pops programming, and inspiring new audiences to discover the wealth of material in the Great American Songbook in dynamic ways.
APO seeks undergraduate and graduate students interested in working for and learning about a non- profit performing arts start-up. Our paid internship program, modeled after others in the performing arts, is designed to provide meaningful learning opportunities and on-the-job experience to students with an interest in the performing arts and/or arts administration.
APO Staff Interns will be encouraged to spend 50% of their time supporting the day-to-day tasks of the organization, and 50% of the internship will be project-based. Spring internships typically last 14- 16 weeks, starting the third week of January. Interns will work roughly 16-20 flexible hours a week and tasks are tailored to the needs of the organization and the interests of the intern, when possible.
As a Staff Intern, you will have the unique opportunity to learn about and contribute to several areas of performing arts management, including development/fundraising, music operations, production, and marketing. Example tasks for these areas include:
Development / Fundraising:
Learn about development and fundraising operations
Research innovative fundraising campaigns
Contribute to donor list building and activation
Provide administrative support to create and produce mailings for development
Production / Music Operations:
Learn about the operations management of performers and production aspects o Prepare music scores and books for performers in our 2019-2020 season
Research travel/housing options for performers in DC and traveling shows
Research props and productions items for our upcoming shows
Learn about performing arts marketing and PR
Develop lists of hashtags and other ways of promoting performances through social media
Research innovative marketing techniques
Research on-the-ground marketing (guerrilla marketing) opportunities
Work with our social media team on implementation
APO Interns who complete the program will have the opportunity to gain real-world experience of working at a start-up performing arts organization. Additional benefits include:
Monthly stipend of $500

A letter of recommendation upon successful completion of the internship

About The American Pops Orchestra
The American Pops Orchestra is a new start up non-profit organization, entering it's third season in Washington, DC. For our third season, we will be housed in a new venue. We are looking for an intern to join our small staff of three. We are a close knit group and are looking to find someone that has the skills we are looking for, but will also fit into our organizational culture. Our offices are held in an off site location, from where our performances are held.
