Initiatives of Change International is seeking a Development Officer to play the critical role of finding resources for our new International Trustbuilding Program. We are looking for someone with the relevant skills, but above all someone who is committed to IofC’s mission and values.
Registered in Switzerland, Initiatives of Change International (IofCI) is a non-profit membership organization active in 44 countries, with a near century-long track record of spiritual formation and transformation, dialogue, peacebuilding and trustbuilding worldwide. Its tagline is “building trust across the world’s divides.” A priority of IofCI today is the design, development, funding and launch of an international Trustbuilding Program (TBP) marshaling the knowhow within the movement and offering it to affiliate national teams through a focused program to help them address critical divides in their respective societies. The program, co-created and conducted in partnership with the Fetzer Institute of Kalamazoo, Michigan, will be tested in collaboration with local teams in three pilot countries – Kenya, Canada, and France – in 2019-2020, and conducted in collaboration with local teams in 9-15 additional countries over the three years 2020-2023.
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Development Officer (DO) to work under contract with IofCI and play a pivotal catalytic role in helping IofCI prepare for the next generation of its work. This individual will be responsible for helping to devise and execute the fundraising strategy being developed to support the international TBP, with the added goal of laying the groundwork for long-term institutional sustainability. The DO will work closely with the Program Manager, the Executive Director, and the Program Steering Group to reach both these goals. The DO will play a major role in leading the transition from an essentially internally funded organization, to one that obtains substantial resources from the global philanthropic marketplace. Progress is already being made: $2 million has been secured to leverage the remaining $2.1 million needed to fulfill the TBP over the next four years.
Long term, the DO is expected to help develop strategies for how IofCI can better serve its global network and further IofC’s work and standing in the world. The DO will cultivate long-term partnerships with foundations, corporations, individual donors, and government entities as appropriate. As IofC lacks a deep tradition of professional/institutional fundraising, the person in this position will be expected to work with IofCI staff to build a fundraising culture and the systems needed to support a successful fundraising program. This will entail training and supporting some IofCI staff and national affiliate teams in what is required to raise external funds successfully. The DO is expected to work with the broader network to develop protocols for collaboration and knowledge-sharing with national teams to avoid conflicts, and to develop leads in ways that benefit both the national teams and IofCI. If the DO does the job well and succeeds in building an institutional fundraising program, the job could become a full-time IofCI staff position with benefits and a future.
Work is both office and/ or home based / virtual depending where the candidate is based.
Work with leadership to revise and refine the initial development planning and strategy for the TBP and IofCI;
Identify and research funding prospects to support the TBP and build up IofCI’s organizational infrastructure;
Develop individual strategies for connecting with, cultivating, and soliciting prospects;
Develop a moves management system to track touches, guide cultivation, and help us move strategically to convert prospects into donors;
Work closely with the Program Steering Group to harness their knowledge and contacts, and to involve them in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting prospects as appropriate;
Work with the Program Manager, the Executive Director, and the Program Steering Group to ensure that evaluation of the TBP is yielding the information needed for fundraising;
Work with the Executive Director, the Program Manager, the Communications Director, and the Program Steering Group to develop attractive, compelling communications that support the development and fundraising strategy of IofC International;
Work with affiliated national teams to help them develop local fundraising capacity that works in coordination with IofCI;
Some travel to meet with affiliated national teams and donors.
REPORTING AND REMUNERATION
The DO will report to the Executive Director of IofCI and will work closely with the Program Manager and the Fundraising Chair of the Program Steering Group.
Remuneration is to be commensurate with relevant experience.

REQUIRED PERSONAL QUALITIES AND SKILLS
Candidates should demonstrate the following qualities and skills:
Commitment to the core principles and vision of IofC, including spiritual grounding;
Familiarity with IofC or comparable work (desirable);
At least a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field;
Strong communication and presentation skills (in English); and a commitment to open two-way communication with colleagues and volunteer leaders;
Demonstrated leadership and people skills;
Proven success as a development professional in the international arena, with independent responsibility for a portfolio of donors; or comparable experience in corporate sales or advocacy;
Extensive experience of proposal development and writing in the international arena;
Demonstrated skill in cultivation, networking, solicitation, and stewardship of a broad array of donors, including foundations, individuals, businesses, and government entities;
Research and analytical skills;
Resilience and perseverance;
Clear understanding of the ethics and accountability required in the fundraising field;
Ability to juggle multiple demands and remain poised and diplomatic at all times; and
Ability to work with a small integrated core team and with a multiplicity of volunteers from diverse cultures across the globe;
Strong computer skills including MS Word and Excel;
Telecommuting is allowed.
