The Director of Development works closely with the Executive Director and Board of Trustees to oversee and manage all aspects of the Foundation’s development program. The Director of Development must be able to think strategically and practically to implement a comprehensive and results-oriented development plan that includes traditional and innovative strategies. Key components of this plan should include goals, strategies, and timetables for annual appeals, major and comprehensive campaign gifts, planned giving, and matching gifts, and should include a complementary focus on prospecting and tactics to build key relationships with the actuarial community, corporate, and foundation leaders.
Nature and Scope of Position
1. Participates with the Executive Director, staff and Board of Trustees to define the Foundation’s fundraising and volunteer development priorities.
Provides vital input in short- and long-term strategic and operational planning and positioning within the.
Ensures that philanthropy and fund development are carried out in keeping with the Foundation’s values, mission, vision and plans.
Participates with the Executive Director, staff and board in charting the Foundation’s course in fund development.
Evaluates the effect of internal and external forces on the Foundation and its fund development, recommends short- and long-range fund development plans and programs that support the Foundation’s values, mission and general objectives.
Keeps informed of developments in philanthropy and fund development as well as the general fields of management and the not-for-profit sector; informs the Executive Director, Development & Marketing Committee and board on current trends, issues, problems and activities to facilitate policy making. Recommends policy positions concerning fund development.
Helps develop a balanced funding mix of donor sources and solicitation programs tailored to the needs of the Foundation that will enable it to attract, retain and motivate donors and fundraising volunteers.
Helps establish performance measures, monitors results and helps the Executive Director, Development & Marketing Committee and board evaluate the effectiveness of the Foundation’s fund development program.
2. Provides general oversight of all the Foundation’s fund development activities, manages the day to-day operations of the development function, and monitors adequacy of activities through coordination with staff, appropriate committees, and board.
Ensures compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, maintains accountability standards to donors and ensures compliance with code of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct for fundraising executives.
Ensures establishment of and compliance with the Foundation’s own fund development and philanthropic principles, policies and procedures.
Appropriately represents the Foundation, its board and executive director to donors, prospects, Development & Marketing Committee and fundraising volunteers.
3. Ensures attainment of the Foundation’s fund development activities through the selection, development, and motivation of volunteers.
Helps the Executive Director, board and the Development & Marketing Committee determine accountabilities for board members and fundraising volunteers and helps evaluate performance regularly.
Helps identify, cultivate, recruit, and develop fundraising volunteers and leadership. Trains, places, coordinates and supervises fundraising volunteers.
Designs educational programs in fund development for staff and volunteers; participates as teacher and facilitator. Pursues formal and informal education for self and others.
4. Works with the Executive Director, Development & Marketing Committee Chair and chair of the Foundation Board of Trustees to ensure fulfillment of fund development roles and facilitate the optimum interaction between staff and volunteers.
With the Development & Marketing Committee Chair, develops agendas for meetings so that the committee can fulfill their responsibilities effectively; develops an annual calendar to cover all crucial development issues in a timely fashion.
Informs the Executive Director and volunteer leadership on the condition of the Foundation’s fund development program and on all important factors influencing it.
Gets the best thinking and involvement of each board member and each fundraising volunteer; and, stimulates each one to give his/her best.
Annually, evaluates the performance of fundraising volunteers and reports to the Executive Director with recommendations for board candidacy.
5. Designs and assures implementation of cost-effective fund development programs, employing economy while maintaining an acceptable level of quality and solid return on investment.
Assures proper planning including goal setting, strategy identification, benchmarking and evaluation to support fund development.
Assures sound fiscal operation of development function including timely, accurate and comprehensive development of charitable contributions income and expense budgets, reporting, monitoring and implementation.
Combines development resources in such a way as to maximize quantity and quality to obtain a set of results. Assures appropriate market testing to reduce risk and assure success.
Helps board members, Executive Director, other fundraising volunteers and staff identify, cultivate and solicit charitable gifts.
Solicits contributions on behalf of the Foundation, generally by accompanying volunteers.
Assures design and maintenance of donor and prospect records, gift management systems, and informational reports.
Assures appropriate prospect research.
Assures design and implementation of cultivation, acknowledgment and recognition programs.

Performance Expectations and Qualifications
Demonstrates servant leadership, embodies the Foundation’s mission, and exemplifies a collaborative, decisive, motivating and engaging communication style.
Proven track record of fundraising success, particularly by securing major gifts, successfully managing campaigns, and engaging a community of motivated supporters.
Minimum of 7-10+ years of increasing responsibility in non-profit fundraising, preferably within an association foundation.
Ability to balance multiple priorities in a complex environment.
Working knowledge of development best practices, trends in association fundraising, fundraising tools and technology, including donor databases, e-mail and online campaigns, and donor research.
Extreme tact and discretion, attention to detail, and a commitment to excellence.
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Business Administration, or other related field.
Deep appreciation and understanding of the Foundation’s mission and the ability to articulate its values and vision internally and externally.
Membership in a professional fundraising association is expected of a professional. Baseline certification in fund raising, the CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Professional) is preferred.
Extensive travel with up 50% of time spent out of the office.
