Coordinate public relations projects for the Membership/Education/Research/Council (MERC) Department, including providing administrative and strategic support related to media relations, communications, marketing and social media.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITY
Liaison between MERC Department and Public Relations Team: Meet and collaborate with staff in MERC Department to maintain a solid understanding of department communication needs and goals; Deliberate and consult with PR team to develop strategic recommendations; Create proposals complete with timelines and budgets and present to the MERC team. Responsibility may include developing agendas, leading meetings, and managing vendors.
Social Media:Work with MERC and PR/Marketing Team to develop and maintain active, engaging and strategic social media channels. Duties may include contributing to social media blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn or private communities on behalf of SEMA; Responsibility may also include creating content, drafting text and captions, and taking and/or selecting photos and videos. Light editing utilizing programs and apps to generate creative and engaging posts that align with established goals and objectives may be required.
Media Relations: Work with MERC and PR/Marketing Team to identify and coordinate media activities that will promote MERC and support program objectives. Activities may include routing and tracking incoming media inquiries, developing message points, scheduling interviews and monitoring media clips. Responsibility may also include drafting press materials such as releases and fact sheets. Also assist in identifying and developing timely and newsworthy story ideas for both international marketing pieces and outside media.
Newsletters and Emails: Work with MERC and PR/Marketing Team to assist with newsletters and emails. Responsibility includes working with internal team to schedule distributions, obtain lists, track performance, as well as identify story topics and writing.
Websites: Work with MERC and PR/Marketing Team to maintain web pages. Duties include monitoring for accuracy, coordinating updates with web designers and evaluating effectiveness.
Special Projects: Work with MERC and PR/Marketing Team on special projects and events involving the media, including the MPMC Media Trade Conference, TORA Media Preview, etc. Duties may include generating promotional schedule, monitoring the project and updating stakeholders on the status to ensure timeline and successful completion
Additional support:When directed by management, perform other duties and assignments as required.
Reports to Public Relations Director.
Interfaces with all levels of staff.
Interfaces with media, SEMA members, exhibitors and vendors.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
Strong verbal and written communication required. Prior experience with journalistic or marketing writing desired, as well as copy editing or proofreading experience.
Experience working with strategic marketing principles desired, with an emphasis on the promotional mix.
Knowledge and experience with association and member-based organizations helpful. Familiarity with automotive industry also helpful but not required.
Ability to manage multiple projects at once, while being able to produce quality work under tight deadlines.
Great customer service skills with the ability to work well with both external and internal customers.
Must be detailed oriented and follow directions well.
Must be able to successfully lead meetings and make presentations. Ability to work well as a team as well as independently.
Comfortable using basic office equipment, including telephone, computers, copy machines and laser printers, including computer software such as Microsoft programs.
Knowledge of social media platforms, understanding about algorithms and metrics, and monitoring and posting tools such as Hootsuite, Cision, Trendkite, Canva, etc.
Ability to attend travel both within Southern California and overnight out of state.
