The Orpheum Theatre is accepting applications for the position of Executive Director from strong leaders with broad practical experience in administration, fundraising and marketing. This is a full-time position, requiring residence in the Galesburg area. The Executive Director works closely with the Knox County Metropolitan Exposition Auditorium and Office Building Authority (KCMEAOBA) board on business planning to expand the company’s reputation for artistic excellence, while maintaining its financial stability. The Executive Director will play a primary leadership role in achieving the theatre’s vision.
This is a full-time position reporting to the KCMEAOBA board. The Executive Director oversees the daily operation, growth and success of the Orpheum Theatre.
Additionally, the director will:
Serve as primary liaison to the KCMEAOBA board
Serve as primary liaison to public entities (i.e. City of Galesburg, Knox County Board, etc.)
Recommend and execute a creative direction for the theatre
Recommend and execute a balanced budget
Create and execute an annual fundraising campaign
Create and execute an annual marketing and publicity campaign
Create and execute a business plan, as needed
Create and execute a capital campaign, as needed
Serve as primary liaison to artists and management
Recommend and execute operational policies and procedures to ensure staff, volunteer and production crew safety
Recommend and execute operational policies which benefit the theatre’s financial standing
Oversee the tasks and responsibilities of the Orpheum Theatre staff
Other duties as assigned by the KCMEAOBA Board of Directors
The theatre is owned and managed by the Knox County Metropolitan Exposition Auditorium and Office Building Authority Board. The theatre is, therefore, a unit of government and the Executive Director must know and understand the Illinois State Statutes which govern the activities and practices of the theatre and the Authority (70 ILCS 200).
Additionally, the Orpheum Theatre also has 501(c)3 status, and the Executive Director must also know and understand the laws and regulations which govern the activities and practices of a non-profit organization as well.
Prior fundraising and capital campaign experience with a theatre or arts organization
Prior marketing and/or public relations experience with a theatre or arts organization
Prior managerial experience with a theatre or arts organization
Prior experience managing volunteer activities with a theatre or arts organization
Prior experience managing a theatre facility
Prior experience with public speaking
Accounting, budgeting and financial reporting
Excellent time management skills
Ability to prioritize and delegate tasks
Self-motivated and able to work in an unsupervised environment
Excellent customer service skills
Advanced knowledge of database, word processing, spreadsheet and graphic design software
Working knowledge of ticketing software
Working knowledge of contemporary sound and lighting equipment, techniques and trends is highly desirable
Ability to perform basic lighting and/or sound engineering duties
Basic understanding of light, sound and stage plots
Ability to work well with Orpheum Theatre colleagues; renting organization representatives; artists and their representatives, stage and road managers, musicians and/or technical crews
Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds
Ability to climb stairs and ladders
Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, sit, stand for long periods of time
