The Department of Communication invites applications for the position of chair, with an anticipated start date of Fall 2019. A Ph.D. in communication or a related discipline and higher education administrative experience are required. We are seeking a pragmatic and visionary leader who holds a combination of academic, professional, and administrative credentials commensurate with the appointment to the rank of associate or full professor with tenure. The Department of Communication houses faculty and programs focusing on mass communication, communication arts, public relations, and advertising; a successful candidate will have significant familiarity with a majority of these fields.
The chair will also have an established and active research agenda with a national or international reputation; a history of teaching effectiveness; belief in shared governance; and a track record of successful faculty, student, and staff mentorship and development. Supporting pedagogical approaches suitable to both liberal arts and professional approaches to communication education is also desired. Expertise is expected in managing budgets, assessing academic programs, meeting state and university metrics, and upholding quality public education.
The ideal candidate will have experience working cooperatively with faculty and students from diverse international backgrounds and disciplines. This candidate will promote scholarship and professional faculty accomplishments, address various challenges in public higher education, and cultivate civic engagement. The chair is also expected to develop external relationships that help further faculty research, teaching, and service outcomes.
The Department of Communication offers B.A.., B.S. and M.S. degree programs with general areas of study including organizational communication, design studies, art and performance, public relations, advertising and global strategic communications. The department is currently developing a proposal for a Ph.D. program.
