The San Francisco Conservatory of Music is looking for a full-time Manager of Ensembles to supervise and coordinate all collegiate large ensemble activities during the academic year. Activities include auditions, rehearsals, and performances for the SFCM Orchestra, Baroque Orchestra, Chorus, New Music Ensemble, and Opera Orchestra.
Reporting to and working closely with the Provost & Dean, the Manager of Ensembles will work in conjunction with Associate Deans and faculty to craft, implement and maintain a comprehensive approach to the student ensemble experience in both large and small settings. The incumbent will coordinate technical details and performance calendars with ensemble directors, ensemble personnel, Communications, Production Office, stage crew and others as needed.
Working closely with faculty, the Manager of Ensembles will oversee management of ensemble personnel, including rosters, assignments, and attendance. The incumbent will also oversee management of SFCM Ensemble Library services, including acquisition of rental and permanent parts, procurement of grand rights, mechanical licenses, and permission for performances, web-streaming, broadcasts and recordings; and production of parts, bowings, audition-excerpt preparation, music distribution, cataloguing and storage.
Other duties include coordinating and engaging judges for all areas of our Annual Concerto Competition; overseeing the lending of orchestral instruments to students; and tracking repairs and maintenance to SFCM's inventory of orchestral instruments; and overseeing master classes by guest artists. The Manager of Ensembles will also update the ensemble website.
To make duties described of the above feasible, the Manager of Ensembles will supervise and have the support of one full-time staff member and a team of student assistants. The incumbent will also coordinate efforts with the Director of Production and Concert Operations and Facilities with regard to concert setups, lighting and other performance needs. The incumbent will perform other duties as needed.
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in music and experience working with faculty and students in higher education or other related settings. S/he must have a demonstrated capacity to lead artistic projects effectively and creatively; have an extraordinary attention to detail; and a strong ability to juggle multiple simultaneously and consistently meet deadlines. Excellent communication, dynamic interpersonal and nuanced management skills are essential for success in this role. This position also requires a strong capacity to steward institutional relationships and solve problems in a highly demanding and fast-paced environment. Flexible hours, including weekends, are a requirement. Applicants should also have prior music library and/or ensemble management experience, knowledge of music licensing and copyright laws, and experience managing budgets. Experience with Sibelius and/or Finale software is desirable.
